Digital Smile Design

Digital Smile Design is how we turn a conversation about your smile into a plan you can see, feel, and sign off on before any treatment begins. It is the digital workflow that sits underneath every comprehensive cosmetic case we take on — veneers, smile makeovers, full mouth rehabilitations, implant cases on the front teeth — and it is the single biggest reason our patients arrive at the final result without surprises. You see the new smile before you commit to it. You change it where you want to change it. And only then do we start.

From conversation to design

Every Digital Smile Design starts with a conversation. What do you like about your smile? What do you want to change? Are there old photographs you reach for, a celebrity smile you keep coming back to, a feature of your own face you want the new smile to flatter? The cosmetic plan we build is yours, not ours — our job is to translate what you want into a result that works with your teeth, your bite, your gums, and the proportions of your face.

The records we work from

Once we know where you want to go, we build the precise digital records we need to get there: a full set of clinical and portrait photographs, an intra-oral scan that produces a three-dimensional model of your teeth accurate to within microns, video of your smile in motion, and where the case calls for it a CBCT scan of the underlying bone. Together those records become a digital model of your face and mouth that we can rotate, measure, and design on — the foundation of everything that follows.

The design itself

Our smile designers work on the digital model to draw the new smile — the shape, length, width, and proportion of each tooth, the curve of the smile line, the way the upper teeth sit against the lower lip, the symmetry of the gum line. AI-generated before-and-after images give you a realistic preview of the proposed result on your own face. Where we want to fine-tune, we do — the canine could come back a touch, the central incisor needs an extra millimetre of length, the smile line wants a gentler curve. The design is iterated until you and the team are happy with it.

Try it on before you commit

This is the step that sets Digital Smile Design apart. Before any tooth is touched, we make a mock-up of the proposed smile in resin and place it directly over your existing teeth in the chair. You see it in the mirror. You see it on your own face. You smile in it, talk in it, photograph it, and you take it home in a video to show the people whose opinion matters to you. If something needs adjusting we go back to the design and adjust it. Nothing irreversible is started until the mock-up is exactly the smile you want.

The blueprint for the treatment

Once the design is signed off, it becomes the blueprint for everything that follows. Veneer preparations are guided to remove only as much tooth as the new shape needs. The ceramist works from the digital design rather than guessing from a written prescription. Crowns, implant crowns, and full-mouth rehabilitations are built to fit the planned smile rather than the other way round. The finished result is the result you saw in the mock-up, executed properly in porcelain.

Why it matters

Cosmetic dentistry used to be a leap of faith — the patient described what they wanted, the dentist did their best to deliver it, and everyone hoped it landed. Digital Smile Design takes the guesswork out. You decide what the smile should look like, on your own face, before the work begins. The dentist works to a clear, agreed brief. The lab works from a precise digital design. The result is a smile that feels like it was always meant to be there, because it was designed to be there long before it was built.
