SKY DENTAL CLINIC

General & Preventative Dentistry

The first consultation

The first consultation at Sky Dental runs about an hour. We don't rush it, because the decisions made here shape everything that comes after. Once we know a little about you, we'll ask what brought you in. Your dental history, past experiences and your current expectations. We will take a comprehensive medical history, medications, grinding, sensitivity, headaches, the bite that's never felt right. A lot of dental problems announce themselves in conversation long before they show up on an X-ray.

The clinical examination is made up of several layers of information that help us form a comprehensive understanding of you and your dental health. They include the following:

Chair examination

A detailed examination in the dental chair, covering hard tissue, soft tissue, teeth, joints, and bite scheme.

X-rays

Standard digital radiographs show what's happening between and beneath the teeth: decay hiding under old fillings, bone loss, the early shadow of an abscess. Most dental problems are invisible to the naked eye until they hurt. X-rays catch them while there's still a choice about how to fix them.

CBCT scan

A Cone Beam CT gives us a three-dimensional view of the jaw, sinuses, nerves, and bone architecture. We use it where two-dimensional imaging isn't enough: implant planning, root canal anatomy, impacted wisdom teeth, suspected fractures.

Full mouth & facial photographs

A camera catches what the eye misses. We photograph the teeth, the smile, and the face in repose and animation. Wear patterns, cracks around old amalgam fillings, gumline asymmetries, the way the upper teeth show when you speak. All of it gets documented. It also gives us a baseline. In five years, when something has changed, we'll know.

Intra-oral scan

A digital scan replaces the old putty impressions. It produces a precise 3D model of your teeth and bite that we can rotate, measure, and refer back to. These models can be used for smile designs, clear aligners or just for diagnostic value in checking your bite. Crowns and onlays designed from a scan fit better. Aligner cases plan faster. And for the patient, it means no tray of material setting in your mouth.

Once all these investigations are taken, you will return to the office with your dentist and go through each layer of knowledge with them. By the end of your appointment you will have a complete understanding of the state of your oral health, and the future plan needed to optimise it.

Hygiene appointments

A hygiene appointment is the foundation of your oral health, and we treat it that way. It runs a full hour, and it isn't a quick polish between other procedures — it's a thorough clean, done properly, with time to do it well. Every hygiene visit includes:

  • Airflow cleaning — we use PTB Airflow, a gentle jet of fine powder, warm water, and air that lifts stain and biofilm from places a hand instrument can't reach, including under the gumline. It is non-invasive and surprisingly comfortable.
  • Scaling — careful removal of tartar and calculus from the teeth and just below the gumline, where plaque hardens and inflammation starts.
  • Fluoride treatment — a professional-strength application that strengthens enamel and protects against early decay, particularly in the areas most prone to it.
  • Oral hygiene instruction — practical, personalised guidance on brushing, flossing, and interdental cleaning, based on what we see in your mouth on the day, not a generic handout.

We use the latest hygiene technology, and the result is closer to a spa treatment than a medical appointment — your teeth feel clean, your gums feel calm, and your mouth feels properly minty-fresh. We recommend a hygiene visit two to three times a year, depending on your gum health, your habits, and what we see at your check-ups. Regular cleanings are the simplest, most effective thing you can do to keep your teeth for life.
